Retouching a photo can be a simple task, or it can be very involved. Many graphics programs can assist an artist in the 'fixing' of minor errors, but the more complicated ones require knowledge of what makes the 'picture' work with colors, pixels, resolution, and format.
The examples here are to show the processes and results to make a photo useable instead of trash.

The photo was first cropped, to take out the 'gouge', and then carefully blended over the large scratch with the use of Photoshop tools, and even cutting and copying over from nearby areas when necessary. Color levels and contrasts were also adjusted, assisting the blending of the new to the old, and saving the photo from the trash pile.

This is a Laugh and a Half! A legal case, and a half in the making! Still might be in fact... We shall see. Photographed this gal, who a few months later got abdominoplasty and all done by the surgeons in a West Central Florida Hospital (Hopefully not then one that likes to cut off the wrong limb either!) Her 'Manager' who does not have a 'license' to be such, decided to alter the pic herself, and turned it into a botch job, not realizing that in the process that she had opened herself, and the model who then used the picture to a legal liability for the tune of $250,000 or more for Copyright Infringement. Anyways...  After a laborious 2 hour workover and photoshopping effort, the surgery was successful, and she was probably better off than she was with the real surgery, (Less pain I am sure!) and FAR better off, and less costly than the BOTCH JOB her friend cost her!
